Kalamba Brick House
Project type
Residence Renovation
Date
2026
Location
Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India
The renovation of this 25-year-old residence is conceived as a dialogue between past intent and present relevance. Originally built under the influence of Laurie Baker’s principles, the house embodied a sensitivity to climate, material honesty, and economical construction.
Our design approach does not seek to overwrite this legacy, but to reinterpret it. The intervention is guided by Baker’s teachings—celebrating exposed brick as both structure and finish, embracing passive design strategies, and allowing craftsmanship to remain visible and expressive. Existing walls are carefully retained, repaired, and extended where necessary, preserving their tactile character while adapting to contemporary spatial needs.
The renovation introduces subtle spatial reconfigurations to improve light, ventilation, and usability, while maintaining the integrity of the original material language. Openings are recalibrated to enhance cross-ventilation, and new insertions are designed as quiet continuations rather than contrasts.
This project becomes less about transformation and more about continuity—an evolution rooted in context, where the spirit of Laurie Baker’s architecture is not replicated, but thoughtfully carried forward into a modern living environment.
